When you visit the service center here at Heritage Subaru Owings Mills, you'll notice that we have a commitment to doing car care right. Part of that commitment extends to which Subaru parts we use when making repairs, and that's why we only use OEM components.
What Does OEM Mean?
OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer.” That means that the company making the replacement part made the original product that it's being used in. So, because Subaru manufactured your car, it's important to only use OEM Subaru parts in your replacements.
Other parts and components are engineered by different manufacturers who had no hand in building your vehicle.
Why We Use OEM Parts
If there are other parts available, why use OEM parts? Aren't some of those other aftermarket parts less expensive? That is actually true, but that can be a problem. A part that's less expensive might also be of poorer quality. Because there are so many different aftermarket manufacturers to sort through, it's hard to know which ones are doing a quality job.
Think about this scenario. You go to the mechanic and get some work done. They use generic parts instead of ones right from your car manufacturer. They're less expensive and your repair bill is a bit lower than you expected. Great, right?
Then you drive your car for a bit and find out that the part used was not that reliable. It's broken down long before it should have. Now you're back at the mechanic spending even more money, so you didn't end up saving after all.
