With gas prices nearing record highs, you’re likely looking for ways to save at the pump. Of course, you may an excellent choice by purchasing a new Subaru car in the first place, as they are known for their fuel-efficiency. However, beyond driving a fuel-efficient car, there are additional ways in which you can save on gas.

Here are the top six, presented by the mechanics at our Subaru service center.

Go Easy on the Pedals

Speeding, braking, and rapidly accelerating are three ways to easily waste gas. Depending on the type of vehicle that you drive, poor driving habits can negatively impact fuel economy between 15 and 30 percent. Thus, not driving like a race car driver can lead to gas savings of up to $1.24 per gallon.

Slow Down

Gas mileage tends to decrease at speeds over 50 miles hour. Driving at slower speeds can save 22 to 43 cents per gallon.

Avoid Idling

Idling gets you zero miles per gallon and consumes several billion gallons of fuel per year. Do not start your car until your are ready to leave.

Check Tire Pressure

Check the pressure of your Subaru tires at least once per month. Driving on underinflated tires can harm fuel economy, as the engine has to work hard to achieve the same results.

Don’t Neglect the Check Engine Light

If your check engine light has turned on, it could indicate an issue with the air filter or fuel filter, two components that can cause fuel economy to suffer.

Replace Spark Plugs

Bad spark plugs can decrease fuel economy up to 30 percent. If it has been some time since you replaced the spark plugs, schedule an appointment at our service center.
